hands of time
DAY AFTER DAY, LIKE A LIFETIME AWAY, I KEEP HOLDIN' ON
Adrenaline was pumping through his veins as the last adjustments had been made to the time machine. He only half listened to Nathaniel as the man talked, telling him things he already knew. How important this all was. What was all at stake. How he couldn't fail. How there was no going back. What was there really to go back to though? This desolate world of ruin and decay. Earth was just a wasteland of snow and ash, nothing at all like the lush green and bright city jungles his grandmother used to tell him about. No, this wasn't something he wants to go back to, and told the man as such before slipping into costume.
He had to get into 'character'. And didn't that just bring a bitter smile to his face. Though gone in an instant, it wouldn't do to be bitter. he had to be happy-go-lucky Bart, the future tourist. Like he planned. Like he had acted out over and over again until it integrated into his mind. He had a mission to do. And he was not going to fail it over something trivial. And with that determination, Bart placed the goggles over his head and double checked to make sure he had everything he needed. That the item was secure in the compartment. "Better get to it." he said, his voice soft but full of conviction as he walked away from the man who helped make it possible to create the machine.
He trodded carefully over the unstable structure of what used to be Titans Tower. The floor was weak and it was a miracle the had found a means up the top floors and even more so found flooring that was sound enough to support not only their weight but the machine's as well. Well soon it will only have one weight to support. he thought as he climbed inside and closed the door. He began to press in the needed coordinates of the year he needed to get to. 2014, forty-two years into the past. And it was only as the machine whirred to life and the pull of the time stream began to tug at him that he was filled with the sudden wish to have least been able to tell his mother good-bye.
---
The time machine rocked and shook against the rough waves of the time stream, causing for a bumpy ride for the young speedster. He hissed a little as he felt his shoulder hit roughly to the side and wished briefly that he had been able to installed a seat-belt of some kind. But as he looked out the little window of his door, he felt himself forget the pain as he was overcome by the sight. Colors. Colors swirled everywhere in a breathtaking view as he was transported across the space time continuum. There were no words for him to think as he watched it all dance around outside before a bright flash of white light caused him to shut his eyes.
The a large thud sounded and Bart nearly hit his head against the ceiling of the time machine. Blinking his eyes opened, it took him a moment to realize the shaking had stopped and that his outside view had changed. It was with a great realization and a large sense of pride that he realized he had made it his destination. He made it! he actually made it! I can't believe I did it! he thought, a victorious grin forming on his lips as his mind raced through all the possibilities. But then he remembered he was still in the machine.
Ok, just like you rehearsed. Bart thought as he closed his eyes and took a deep breath. His hand went to the latch and opened the door, steam releasing outwards as the pressure was removed from the door to allow its opening. Here goes nothing. And with that thought, he jumped out through the door and landed on his feet in a crouched position. Vaugley he heard the sounds of some kind of alarm ringing out that an intruder was in the tower, but it sounded so slow to him and he paid it no mind as he stood up straight. With arms stretched out in a showman like position he gave his best Flash-Family grin. "Tadah~" he cheered out, as if he didn't realize what 'intruder alert' wasn't a good thing.
