Sterling coughed, waiting at the airfield in Gotham. He was waiting for a friend, and someone he hadn't met before that his parents had hired to guard him on this little mission he was undertaking. Normally, he'd have been able to handle himself, as he was getting quite a bit better with magic than he had been. Things, however, had changed.
He was dying.
Fimblvetr had burned. It had been another fight with those damnable twins that had hounded him trying to get their hands on his spellbook, and in the end they had set it on fire when it was clear they wouldn't be getting it away from him. Something had reacted with his natural magic flow and completely blocked his magical energies. His body was slowly shutting down, and the magical healer that had looked at him estimated he had about four weeks tops before his body just gave out.
So he stool, supported by a cane, in a hangar on his family's private airfield on the outskirts of Gotham City. Hopefully the two he was waiting for would show soon, so they could get this show on the road.
Mnemosyne sighed as she checked her gear one last time. She had cannibalized most of the iron from her costume to be used for this one. She had a warm leather coat that covered the bracers on her forearms. Over top of the coat was thick detailed steel bracelet on her upper arm. She had a wool scarf pinned on with a iron pin and a set of goggles sitting on top hanging from her neck. Her belt was embellished with elaborate iron carvings. On her thumbs were a set of smooth iron rings. She had a sword and shield strapped her back, which drew a few weird looks but not too many. The only pain had been getting all the materials on the fight over to Gotham, stupid airport security.
She had everything she thought she would need, satisfied she stepped into the hanger, even in the poor lighting her charge wasn't hard to spot with his red coat. He didn't look too good at all, she was afraid he was going to fall over any minute.
Mnemosyne didn't see anyone else yet and walked over to introduce herself. "I am Lethe, I assume you are Sterling." This was her first real job in a long time. So it was weird to use a "not a villain" identity. Luckily there were several known Iron manipulators around the world so her power wasn't uncommon, and last Mnem checked there were a few blood ones two but she the first to do both or someone had already done her stick of pretending to be someone else with each power. She looked around, she had been told she would be working with one of Sterling's friend, but didn't see anyone else around. "I take it I am the first to arrive?"
This whole thing was weird. Kaie didn't know too much of the details here, just that Sterling's book had been destroyed and was in a bad way. It must have been pretty serious. His parents hadn't managed to get ahold of a plane that could comfortably fit her, so they had to improvise. Here Kaie was, in her super uniform with a backpack of clothes and other essentials, standing in a magic circle with Kamina Sterling's dad ready to teleport her out to Gotham. "Alright, ready!"
And then she was there. Kaie appeared in a flash of light, towering over the other two in the hangar. There was a girl there, probably the other help Sterling had mentioned in his messages. And who was- oh god it was Sterling. The boy was looking awful. He'd been a bit lean since she'd met him, but now he looked like he was wasting away. He was using a cane, for X'hal's sake! Kaie dropped to one knee, lightly touching a hand to his shoulder. "Wow Ster, din' know it were this bad." She wanted to kick herself as soon as she said that. It wasn't the most comforting thing she could have said.
Kaie turned towards the other girl, offering a finger to shake. "Name's Rumble, or Kaie if ya like. I'm one o' Sterling's pals from the Titans." The girl didn't look too much older than Kaie. Maybe she was a super too? Either that, or just had some super nuts training like Robin. That could do just as well as superpowers in a pinch.

He smiled as the young woman approached. It was a wan smile, but a smile nonetheless.
"Yes, I am Sterling Mortlock. It's good to meet you, Lethe."
When Kaie arrived, his smile got a bit bigger. It was plain to see that he might (Read definitely did) have a crush on the giant lass. As soon as she spoke, his smile faded slightly, but stayed on his face.
"It's...only going to get worse from here, I'm afraid. I don't know if we'll even be able to find my brother, but now that we're all here, I can offer a briefing I suppose, unless you'd rather we talk and fly at the same time? It would save some time....and thank you both for coming."
Sterling sighed, brushing his silver hair out of his face with his left hand. The pilot, his sister Sidebras, had put aside her more necromantic tendencies for a while to get them where they needed to go. Her daughter had been left with their father.
"Yo, you'll fit, kiddo. Plane's bigger on the inside than it is on the out. Spacial magic is fun stuff. Door will stretch, too. Tell'em where we're goin' on the way there. I assume Dad told them most of it, seeing as he brought them on board. And teleported Rumble here."
Sidebras pushed her own blonde hair back into a ponytail, it was almost like she had been too worried about her brother to really get ready this morning. While the Mortlock family was mostly an amoral money machine, aside from Sterling, they tended to come together when there was a Mortlock in trouble. The fact that the small town they were going to in Iceland was shielded from Teleportation magic was a setback, but Sidebras could fly the family's private supersonic jet.
Sterling nodded, and walked up the steps into the jet, aided by the cane. He only broke out in one coughing fit on the way up, but after it there were scant flecks of blood on his hand, which he discretely wiped off on his jeans. Taking a seat in the jet, he waited for the other two.
Mnemosyne turned as soon as she felt Kaie appear. Their interaction was very telling and was very interesting on why Sterling as asked the Giantess to come on this venture. Mnem tried to absorb as much the conversation as possible before turned to Kaie. The Iron Maiden smiled and took the giantess's finger and shook it. Kaie, aka Rumble. Very likely the titan's heaviest hitter, if not she was close to it. "I am Lethe, and it is a pleasure to meet you." She refrained from starting a conversation as her charge and his sister explained a bit of what the problem was.
The iron wield was next up the plane, she was a bit in awe of the size change. They hadn't been kidding, the inside was huge. Mnemosyne took a seat across the way from Sterling. Set set her shield and sword down next to her as she waited for Kaie to follow suit.
"We're looking for you're brother yes? Do you have any leads aside from him being in Iceland?" As morbid as is sounded, and if Sterling's own predictions were anything to go by, the red wizard was not going to be a viable information source for long.
That... was not comforting at all. Sterling was already looking hella weak right now, and it was only going to get worse? How fast? How much time did they have? She had a lot of questions, but there was no time to ask right now, and she didn't know if they'd help or just upset Sterling. Once they were on the move and doing the briefs thing she could ask. At least he still had a smile for her, that was always nice to see. Kaie gave him her own strained smile. "Don' worry, we'll have ya fixed up right quick." She really hoped she was right about that.
Lethe. So she was going entirely by super name. Not really surprising. Kaie and Sterling were exceptions to that rule, with Sterling's odd family and Kaie's unhideable size. No blaming someone for trying to keep their secret identity. "You too." Thinking back, Kaie couldn't remember hearing of a super by that name before. Maybe she was new?
Lethe was first on board the plane. Sterling was following her when he doubled over, coughing. Kaie put out a hand, gently supporting him. It was hard seeing him like this. She really hoped this brother of his could help. The giantess helped him up, then followed him up. Both the stairs and the door grew to fit her, allowing her to step inside without even bending down. The plane was massive on the inside! Kaie was a bit overwhelmed for a minute, making her way over to a seat and watching it grow to fit her. Rumble took a seat next to Sterling, across from Lethe. "Yeah, whas the plan, chief?"

Sterling's hand shook slightly as he pressed the button on his seat that started the projector. His pointing implement was a simple laser pointer.
Projected on a screen to the side of them that automatically descended from just above the window, he pointed at the run down airstrip they would be landing at. "We land here. The last place Lavant, the name my brother has taken, was seen was in a village about a mile south of the airstrip, here.", he pointed at the small village. "Given his nature, I suspect he'll be in one of the caves between the airstrip and the village."
Truth be told, finding him would likely be simple. Getting him to help Sterling, however, would not be.
"There's a bit of a story behind my brother being disowned, and believe it or not it's a dumb one, but it's what happen-" Sterling was interrupted by a coughing fit. He quickly regained his composure, though, and continued. "Essentially, my father disowned him because he despises anime. My father is a known eccentric, and dare I say a weeaboo." He gave a slight chuckle. "He burns bridges based on the silliest things, but I digress. The hardest part, I suppose, is going to be convincing my brother to help me. He may attack me on sight, given how he feels about the rest of the family. I was very young when this happened, though, about two or three, so you're here mostly as a precaution. I doubt we'll see actual combat."
Lethe had been paid handsomely, but two hundred and fifty thousand was all his parents could convince Kaie to take, and that was upon insisting. Such an amount was being paid handsomely for a normal person, mind you, but to someone with the resources Sterling had it was pretty much chump change.
Sterling pressed the button again, and it retracted the screen, and he stowed the laser pointer away in his pack, which was sitting on the ground next to his leg.
"If either of you get hungry, or thirsty, the fridge over there is fully stocked."
Lethe blinked hearing the story...Sterling's family was quite strange, or at least his dad was. After a minute Lethe spoke, "I see, it is good to hear that we will likely not see combat, but preparation is always a good thing. The largest concern I for see is making sure you are able to make it to see your brother."
His health was failing him, he walked and his cough didn't sound like a normal sore throat kind of thing. Magic was always weird and touchy, there was a price for breaking rules like that. Power wasn't free. She thought for a moment before speaking again. "Do you have any other clues to offer us on where he might be? What to be watching out for that might give away his location? If your brother does take hostile action, how does he attack?" Mnem sighed and took a breath. "I apologize for so many questions there are so many things that need answering if you can."
Lethe looked over at Kaie, "Can you think of anything else I may have missed?"
"What." For a moment, Kaie was distracted from the seriousness of the situation. Did he say anime? Yep, he did. Sterling's dad had seemed so nice, was he really petty enough to completely disown someone for not liking anime? I mean, sure, it was common knowledge that he was a little loopy, but this was more pants-on-head insane. Kaie listened in stunned silence, not sure what to say for the rest of the briefing.
Lethe was more on point with the questions. No sooner had Sterling finished but she fired off a few, trying to gather all the information she could. Kaie was still trying to catch up, to be honest. This was all a lot to take in. Sterling's condition was unsettling enough, but all the bizarre family secrets were scrambling her think pan. Then Lethe asked if she had anything to ask. Kaie sat like a deer in the headlights for a moment before shaking her head. There was a lot she still wasn't clear on, but she had no idea how to ask it.
"I think I'll get a soda. You guys want anythin?" Kaie made her way over to the fridge, marveling that the plane wasn't shifting at all under her weight. Whatever magic they'd worked on this thing was pretty impressive. Kaie opened the fridge, and was pleased to see they'd planned for her. She grabbed herself a two-liter of Coke, she'd need the caffeine for all this.

The roleplay takes place after the series end of the original Teen Titans animated show, but does not include the movie Trouble in Tokyo. Since then Robin has been on something of a recruiting spree, and many new young heroes have found themselves a home in Jump City as well as Titan Tower.
