PERSONALITY
Skit isn't really a trusting person. He was raised with the idea that everyone's just out for themselves, and he expects people to behave that way. It makes him a bit nervous if people are nice to him, he wonders what they're trying to get out of him. For his part, Skit is a bit of a brusque sort. He won't go out of his way to be rude to someone, but he doesn't really help unless he thinks he can get something out of it. For now, at least. There's part of him that wants to be more open with people, but he doesn't feel like he can trust anyone enough to try. It'll take a lot of coaxing and shows of good will to make him actually be full-on friends with someone.
In terms of ruthlessness, Skit is a lot harder to pin down. He's been trained since childhood as a spy and assassin, and he has no problem using his knives. Thing is, that only holds true as long as he doesn't know someone. As long as he doesn't think of them as a person, he can do what he has to. If it's someone he's talked to and gotten to know, he doesn't have the heart to do it. He's only ruthless if he has miles of emotional distance.
POWERS/SKILLS
As a rat spirit, Skit's more about stealth and cunning than he is about raw power. He has strong senses of smell and hearing, letting him track people, and he sees far better in the dark than humans can, his eyes adjusting almost instantly. His claws make him a natural climber, and his light frame and double knee let him fall from far higher than a human without getting hurt. His real power, though, is in the shadows. Skit can bend shadows around himself, allowing him to hide almost completely in any shadow larger than his body. He can still show up on other sensors, but to those looking at the shadow he's nearly invisible to the naked eye and most cameras. Note that this doesn't make him immaterial or protect him in any way. He's still there, just really hard to see. His entire body is shrouded, but none of it is shielded.
Gadgets: A pair of KA-BAR knives and 8 small throwing knives.
WEAKNESSES
-Not used to direct, fair fights
-Strength and speed are still at human levels
-Vulnerable to magic
-Needs his tail for balance. Hurt it and it'll throw him off.
-Sudden loud noises
HISTORY
Skit comes from a family of Nezumi, Japanese rat-spirits. Back in the 1800s, his ancestors had stowed away on ships bringing Japanese farmers to California, hiding among the cargo. Once in the US, they'd made a decent living in cities and slums, doing dirty work for any crook who would hire them. Their natural stealth abilities made them excellent for wetwork. Unfortunately, circumstances changed. Once the US entered World War II, "supernatural sneaking powers" and "Japanese ancestry" weren't a winning combination. The Nezumi were forced to flee the cities, hiding in the most remote wilderness they could find to avoid the Internment Camps.
The Nezumi had kept hidden for decades, while the elders who remembered Internment were still around. Skit was born near the end of their reign. He was part of a litter of ten, and not born to the best parents. They weren't particularly fond of their kids, just naming them after noises they'd made. Skit, for instance. They left the rearing of their kids to an older litter, letting the older siblings train the kids in the traditional way. They were taught to be stealthy, cunning spies and assassins.
Then the elder of their clan died, and leadership passed on to Skit's parents. They'd been eking out a meager existence for decades, hunting what they could to feed their litters. They didn't want that burden anymore, and they were pretty sure Internment was long-done anyway. Even if it wasn't, who would remember Nezumi? They'd been in the shadows to begin with. All of their children who were old enough to fend for themselves were kicked out, told to find their own place. Skit made his way to Jump City, where he's tried his best to settle in. It took some getting used to, but he eventually fell in with the right wrong crowd. Criminals in Jump were glad to hire someone who could fade into shadows and was good with a blade. Skit has saved up a little money, enough for an efficiency apartment in a crummy neighborhood, some normal clothes, and some knives from a military surplus store. What more could a guy need?
