Sometimes, it was good to get away from it all.
And, that's exactly what our favorite Russian hero was doing. He had managed to locate the address of an old Library hidden deep downtown. He put on his headphones, blaring some European metal into his ears as he roamed the rows of bookshelves. Fingertips running along old, dusty books. The old man behind the counter seemingly asleep as Red Star was allowed to walk in peace. The smell of old literature filling his nostrils. It reminded him of home, his father reading to him from old books when he was a boy.
Now, everything was all digital. Books were downloaded onto screens and screens were swiped where pages were turned. It wasn't the same. How could a book have a battery life and still allow people to get lost within it's pages? A light sigh escaped his lips. It was different for him. All of this technology was so alien to him. Even the iPod strapped to his arm felt like an overabundance of tech he carried with him. Sure, it was convenient to not have to change out albums. But, part of the fun of listening to a new album was seeing if there were any other songs that were as good, if not better.
Now, everyone just picks the songs they hear on the radio and rarely go beyond that.
Lost in thought, his hand caught on a book sticking out further than the others. It was a black leather bound book that had an almost Lovecraftian design on the spine. As he pulled it from the shelf, he swore he could smell the ocean over the smell of old paper and dust. But, he just shrugged it off. Surely, it was because he was so close to the beach. He opened the book, and it leaped from his hands onto the floor. As he leaned down to pick it up, a massive tentacle covered in suction cups reached out of the book and pulled him inside of it. In a flash, Red Star was gone and the book jumped back into it's spot on the shelf.
Within the dimension he was sucked into, he fell onto the deck of a ship. Cold rain poured on top of him. Slowly, he stood to look around. Sailors were running around, doing their usual business in the middle of a storm. Leonid couldn't believe his eyes. He slowly backed up, grasping the main mast. One hand reaching up to pull his headphones off of his ears. This was not what he expected when he stepped out of the Tower for the day.
Sometimes, you just had to get away.
