School had been on break over the holidays, but when they resumed in January Starfire had elected not to return. The threat of an alien invasion was far more important than her integration into American culture. There may not be an Earth, and consequently an 'America', left by the turn of the next year. It was difficult for her to focus on anything else, and that included her duties as a Titan. What was thievery and even the lives of a few to the threat of a world-wide sweep from one of the universes' greatest conquerors? To some, the change in Starfire's demeanour made he almost unrecognizable.
That didn't mean the Titan that they knew was lost forever. Starfire did concede to her usual patrol route that day, and flew over the city with a watchful eye. In the grand scheme of things she may seemed to have been dismissive of lives, but it wasn't as though their loss had not pained her. The guilt of having hurt people the night of New Years Eve, and some dead because of her actions, did weigh down on her. The way she could fly now, a task that required her to feel unbridled joy, was the image of destroying the enemy that was the cause of her grief.
During her round she noticed a disturbance in a very familiar setting. In the court-yard of Kingston High Academy was a rogue meta-human. She could see the students scattering from the scene as the buff female in the middle was tearing everything up in rage. Starfire swooped down and landed before her. "I am warning you to stop! Put down that bench, and come along peacefully," she ordered, holding her glowing hand out.
The rogue meta did not listen to her, and threw the bench at Starfire. However, Starfire was easily able to catch such an object, and propelled it right back. It hit the girl and shot her backwards into the bushes. Not waiting for the girl to get up, she shot forward, twirled, and pinned down the larger human female with her feet spread to hold down the biceps. Of course, there was still the rest of her arms, and the raging female student was quick to try and grab onto her. Starfire was too nimble in the air to be caught, and so back down only to body slam with her elbow into her diaphram, winding her temporarily.
"Call the authorities if you have not already!" she yelled to the bystanders. This was a rare, but not unheard of, case where a human would express their metagene later in life, most commonly around puberty, and were unable to control them. It seemed that this student had lost all higher mental faculties and had resorted to simply the need to destroy. Her body's musculature seemed distended and unnatural. It gave Starfire no joy to see her writhing around and struggling for air. She needed to restrain the girl to keep her from hurting herself or others. The problem was she had not sufficiently prepared for such a scenario. Hopefully the authoritiesor somebody else would come in time for the assist before the metahuman regained breath.
"Hey, isn't that Starfire? I hadn't seen her since before the break..." One girl commented.
"Didn't you see the news? She killed an alien and caused a building to break down. Some people actually died in that..."
"I know! She was always so nice, why are the Titans still allowing a murderer on their team?"
