One thing her brother was never very lenient on when he was alive was Charlie’s school, both attendance and grades were monitored by Harris even with the busy schedule their parents put him on. So she would honor his memory by graduating high school, not with top marks of course, Charlie wasn’t that book smart but she could at least do her best. Plus high school was the best place to meet new people and make friends! She just hoped the Rudolf name wasn’t as well known in Jump City as it was in Star. Maybe when she turned eighteen she should change her name!
The school was bustling with kids in uniforms walking around in groups or sitting around copying homework. It wasn’t much different from Charlie’s old school really. She smiled at those who glanced her way, even waved a few times. The kids seemed to be staring at all the bandages she was wearing. When Charlie had walked past, the whispering started up. Rumors circulating about the new student clad in gauze and band aids. The honest truth was that she had completely failed a flying practice and crash landed in a pile of trash, which apparently had sharp items in the mix. Yet everyone loves to gossip and by the time Charlie reached the main office for her class list, she was dubbed a dangerous gangster who had taken out three rival gangs in one night. Jeez, could these kids exaggerate!
Charlie, of course, saw the stares and roughly guessed what was going on, she wasn’t oblivious to the points and glances. High school was always the same no matter the city, new things were put on a pedestal to judge or admire.
With a pile of books in tow she quickly stuffed them, save for one, into her locker along with her baseball bag. The fact that the hallways were almost completely empty meant classes would be starting soon. She hurried to her first class and made it through the door just as the bell rang. A stout older man with glasses and a thinning hairline ushered her to the front of the room.
“Class this is the new student Charlene--”
“Charlie,” she interrupted curtly. Which was countered with a glare from the teacher that she merely smiled at.
“Charlie Rudolf who transferred from Star City, treat her well etcetera etcetera,” he waved her away and went to his chalkboard. Charlie took that as a ‘take any seat’ and walked to an empty one near the back. She put her books on the desk and sat down quietly as the teacher started to drone on about some SAT prep stuff. Having a through dislike of the subject Charlie turned to her neighbor.
“Hi,” she whispered. “I’m Charlie what’s you name?”
