While it was true that Elodie MacKelter had been away to deal on business, to say that that was the only thing she did while away would be quite a lie. Sure, she had started an art collection, but she had also been searching for something. From Dublin to Tokyo she searched, her desperation growing with each new location. An experimental formula, a magic spell, an ancient healing stone, anything really. Something to help them, to save them. However, her search came up to nothing, and she was forced to return home.
To return here.
They repainted, Elodie observed the bright, sunny yellow walls as she walked slowly through the halls of the hospital, navigating through them as though shes been there many times before, which was the truth. She carried fresh flowers and a teddy bear with her, and while people around her had brisk walks or were jogging through the halls, Elodies pace was slow, almost as though she was dragging herself somewhere were she didn't want to be. I don't like it. I liked the mint green better. This yellow is mocking me, Elodie thought as she reached for the door to a room when it opened before she could touch it. Elodie took a step back as a nurse came out, Elodie quickly scanning her before placing a bright smile on her face.
"Good evening Jodi. How are they?" Elodie questioned, watching as the nurse smiled right back. Jodi was in her 50's, with brown hair that was going grey, a motherly figure and personality, and an excellent bedside manner. Elodie had asked for Jodi to personally take care of these two patients, for if and when they wake up Jodi could be trusted to take care of them until Elodie can take over. "Good evening to you too, Miss Elodie. And everything's normal, though that little machine of yours is helping in slowly down the atrophy process." Jodi said and Elodie nodded, remembering giving it to Jodi after discovering that their bodies were wasting away. After discussing a few more things with the motherly woman Elodie entered the room, timidly and quietly as she looked at the figures that laid in the two beds in the room.
Her siblings.
Her baby brother and sister.
The family resemblance was uncanny, all three having the MacKelter strawberry blonde hair and pale skin with the slightly freckled face. However, their skin was more of a deathly pale, their freckles barely seen due to lack of sunlight on their skin. Their hair was also cut rather short to keep it from getting tangled as well as to keep it out of the way of the multiple wires that they were hooked up to, the only things keeping them alive and with her.
After Elodie put the teddy bear among the collection of other bears and plush toes that she had brought them over the years and changed out the flowers did Elodie sit in a chair between the beds, careful not to touch anything. She didn't trust her abilities when she was around all this equipment, especially with her history of shorting out machines that she hadn't made. She took in a deep, shaky breath as she looked over their faces, taking the little changes in.
"Um, hi guys. It's me, Elodie. Um, i'm finally back from my business trip. Everything went smoothly, no trouble. Um...." Elodies voice cracked, and she looked up towards the ceiling as she tried to find the words to say. "Moe misses you. I'll have to bring him next time." Elodie said, talking about the family dog as she put her head in her hands, struggling to keep it together. Finally, she spoke, tears in her eyes as she looked between her comatose siblings. "I couldn't find anything to help you." Her voice was choked up, her face turning red as she started to cry.
"I failed you. I wish there were another way for me to say it but I can't. I'm sorry, i'm so sorry." Her face was contorted as the true Elodie emerged from behind the double masks of the upper class Elodie MacKelter and of the villain that she hid herself behind. All that was there was a 17 year old girl who was completely broken and exhausted who had had too much taken away from her. "I can only beg for your forgiveness and pray you can hear me somehow, someway...."
