The one villain that the Titans spent so much time fighting happened to be one of the ones they knew very little about. Barbara had picked up where Robin had left off in his search, with his time in Vietnam. They knew his last name now, but not much more. Yes, he had picked up many skills in the Army, but that did not explain many of the fighting techniques he had used against them in the past, nor did it explain the seemingly rapid healing afterwards. There was one thing that Barbara had not been able to find much about, however. Not long after the war, Slade had been admitted into Jump City Regional Hospital, and records show that he was in a coma for over a month. How he had gotten into the coma could not be found anywhere. She did have her suspicions, though. When he returned, he seemed to stay at a particular base for a while. He did not go home to his wife, and nor did he show up in any records until the hospital. The government was behind this somehow.
In all of the time she spent on the computer, hacking into many different organizations, she couldn't find a thing. Something came up on military experiments, written by some crazy anti-government extremist, however. No matter what she was looking at after that, her thoughts always went back to the book. It had just happened that the book was in the library here in Jump. She guessed she would have to get out of her room for once and put on normal clothes.
Donning her Batgirl outfit, if for nothing other than getting out of the tower without anyone seeing her, she grabbed a bag full of civilian clothing and ran out the door, down the hallway, and to the elevator. Crossing her fingers that no one would stop her and ask for her help with something, the elevator ride down to the garage was painstakingly long. Putting a couple quick adhesive covers over the large yellow batsymbol on the side of her motorcycle's gas tank and over the one behind the seat, she was ready to go out for once as herself. Well, if she thought herself a normal teenage girl, it would. With a quick look to the elevator doors to make sure no one was coming, she slipped out of the suit and into her civvies, hopped on the motorcycle, and rode it down the tunnel and out into the city.
When she got to the library, it had several high school students walking about, looking for this and that, probably for school reports. Something she had done several years back, always teased for being the smartest and the youngest girl in her class. That was really to be expected when you had skipped four grades. Into the nonfiction section she went, her eyes scanning shelves for the book she needed. The name was Military Experiments, under the mythology section. Of course it would be here and not in the actual military information section. She just hoped this guy was right and she wasn't doing all of this for nothing. As she scanned the shelf it was supposedly on, there was an empty space right where the book should be. The redhead grinded her teeth in frustration, looking all around to see if the book had just been shelved in the wrong space.
When she could not find it anywhere, she walked over to the computer database search and looked it up. It was in the library, but where? Now fully annoyed, Barbara adjusted the bag over her shoulder and approached the desk. "Excuse me, ma'am?" Her voice was more than a whisper, but still quiet. "I noticed a certain book is said to be shelved, but it was not where it is supposed to be. Do you know where the book Military Experiments by Malcolm Nicholson would be?" The older woman looked up from the book she was reading [shocker] and smiled. "Miss Gordon, nice seeing you today." Apparently all of the old bats here knew her. "Yes, a young man just came in asking for it. Right over there, with the black hair." She pointed a wrinkled finger down the row of tables not far from them. "Thank you." Barbara smiled back at her and turned, walking towards the boy.
Running a hand through her hair, Barbara sighed, having not wanted to stay here long. She had wished to come in, grab the book, and go, but some little high school twerp was going to get in the way of that. Pulling her black T-shirt back down over the top of her jean shorts, as it had crept up in the discussion, she walked over and stood opposite the boy at the table, putting both of her palms down on the top and leaning over so that she could speak softly to him without anyone hearing. "Is there any way I could get that book from you? I realize that school projects are important, but surely there's another book you can grab for that."
