”Oh come on now ladies and gentlemen, you’re about to miss the final act,” Mumbo said with a laugh as he pulled off his hat, aiming it at the fleeing crowd of park goers as they fled his impromptu stage.
The day had been rather nice and quiet. Sun was shining, birds chirping, waters babbling nicely in the fountains. And then the fountain turned off before spraying into a giant column, the Amazing Mumbo standing proudly on top as he announced today they would all be in for a special treat. The police were dispatched quite quickly, tied up nicely by handkerchiefs for some, or locked in a zig-zag girl box with their heads lovingly separated from their bodies.
Keeping the running citizens in line, however, required a little hands-on-work from Mumbo. Specifically this meant for him summoning up some literal giant gloved hands to corral them so he could work his magic. As he pointed his hat out at the crowd, a giant whooshing sound was heard as cash, coins, wallets, and the occasional pair of keys began to be sucked into the Amazing Mumbo’s hat.
”I thank you all for your patronage. You’ve all been a wonderful audience,” he said as he placed the hat back on his head and took a bow.
Rose was the sort of person who liked to go to the park to chase ducks. It didn't matter that she was fourteen years old and probably shouldn't be doing it anymore. It felt good to have power over the ducks, even if it meant nothing in the end. She often felt so powerless over her own life. Sometimes, it was nice to just be in charge for awhile. Plus, ducks made funny noises. Like the one she was currently chasing in circles to keep it away from a rather choice piece of bread that was sitting on the ground.
In a moment of triumph, Rose kicked the piece of bread into the air, watching as the duck sidled as far away from her as it could before diving into the tiny man made pond after it. That was when the screaming had started on the other end of the park. They say curiosity is what killed the cat. Perhaps, this time, it would be the youngest WIlson's downfall. The girl with the white hair made her way across the park, her almond eyes widening in surprise as she took in the gigantic gloves and tied up policemen.
That was before one of the gloves came after her. Rose didn't know what to do with it, exactly, so she fought it. She was a scrapper, through and through, and apparently that part of her personality extended to rouge accessories. In a scene Benny Hill would be proud of Rose and the giant glove chased each other around the park. In the end, however, the glove managed to force her into the group of hapless bystanders in time for Mumbo's pickpocketing spell to work.
Rose didn't care about the little money she had in her pocket. However when the necklace the girl was wearing slipped off her neck and between her grasping fingers her face turned a livid shade of red. That had been her mother's necklace! Her cry of outrage was drowned out in the mass of other's but there was basically nothing the stupid glove could do to stop Rose from going after the blue bozo who had obviously started this all.
It was a moment of pure ninja brilliance. The youngest Wilson rolled out of the way of the interfering glove before making a mad dash towards the Amazing Mumbo who was bowing before his captive audience. The girl scrambled to a stop at the base of the fountain. She had no idea how she was going to get up there but that magician was so paying. Brawler logic said that if the enemy wasn't on your level, you brought them down to it. Which was why the sheer convenience of the rocks surrounding the base of the fountain could be ignored for the sake of plot. Rose grabbed the nearest, and largest ornamental rock she could find and hurled it at Mumbo with all the force a growing super soldier could muster.
As he was taking his bow Mumbo heard some commotion and the sound of a very obviously angry teenager. Looking up to see what the trouble was, he found his face meeting a very lovely looking rock. Not having time to duck or anything like that, Mumbo found himself taking the express way down off his fountain column straight into the ground. It was fast, but it left a nasty Mumbo shaped silhouette in the ground. After a moment or so a groan could be heard as Mumbo climbed out, relaxing his arms on the edge of the hole.
”Everyone’s a critic…though that’s the first critic that threw a rock at Mumbo.” he said with a shrug as he pulled himself off and dusted himself off.
”Anyway, good shot kid, but the Amazing Mumbo doesn’t do refunds for his shows.”
He knew very well that this kid wasn’t going to go away easy; anyone who threw a rock that hard had to be some kind of superpowered person. Maybe she was a Titan? Nah, they’d probably be spouting off something about justice or whatever by now. In any case, she threw a rock at Mumbo, therefore Mumbo had to do something about it.
”But I see you’re not the type to let it go, so I’ll just take you straight to the complaint department. I’m sure you’ll find it a refreshing experience,” he said as he squeezed the flower on his vest, shooting off a massive torrent of water that definitely was not something you’d see out of a flower that size.
The sound mumbo made when he hit the ground was satisfying, and the little ninja hesitated a moment before she headed over towards the Mumbo-shaped hole. What was she supposed to do now? Ransack his dead body until she found her mom's necklace? That was kind of weird…but if that was what it took…
Mumbo popped out of the whole and the girl's almond eyes widened before narrowing dangerously again. "I didn't even see your stupid show, you dirty thief, but I bet it was so lame it would make me wanna vomit."
Of course the retaliation to her vomit joke would be a flower spewing a massive torrent of water. The little ninja flipped out of the way of the stream, which impacted seconds before she cleared, and she ended skidding in the mud to a stop. Now she was muddy, slightly damp, and totally pissed off. Rose's upper lip curled in dislike before she vaulted into action.
Dodging around the muddiest ground that had been hit by the torrent, Rose made her way back towards Mumbo. It honestly wasn't the brightest decision, but Rose had never been known for her problem solving skills, and punching Mumbo in the face would feel fantastic. She opted for an attempt at a left hook.
She was the bad temper sort of person wasn’t she? Oh he could have some serious fun with this. He just had to make sure not to get hit too much though. As much as he hated to admit it, he got a rather nasty bump from that rock to the head. Smacking into the ground didn’t help things either. But now he was prepared, and if he knew something was coming, he had some…interesting ways to duck and dodge.
As Ravager’s fist went to the head, she would find quite a lack of resistance as Mumbo’s head ducked into his suit, leaving empty space between it and his hat. It quickly reappeared of course, grinning while taking a few steps back.
”I’m starting to think that you need to cool off a little dear,” Mumbo retorted as he waved his wand, sending out a blast of snow and cold air at Ravager and the surrounding ground as it turned into a small winter wonderland.
Rose's childhood had been secluded from everything pop culture, and even if she had watched cartoon as a kid it was unlikely she would have expected what Mumbo had up his sleeve…or perhaps collar was better in this situation. The girl's first hit empty air and her eyes widened in surprise. His head had just vanished! In all her years of fighting she had never come across something like this.
The floating hat, though, that was another story. The girl had enough control over her movements that her fist moved upwards. It opened to pluck the hat that floated above where Mumbo's head normally was out of there air. With her new prize in her hands the little ninja shot back, away from the reach of his arms, with an equally wicked grin on her face.
That was before she literally froze.
It had been a warm day before now. Rose was not equipped to be in the middle of a winter wonderland. She tumbled backwards from the blast she hadn't seen coming, and rolled to a stop in a snow drift. The hat was still in her shivering grasp. The youngest Wilson smirked in triumph before she mashed the hat under her elbow and made a snowball between fingers she was slowly loosing feeling in. "Is that the best you can do, blue butt?" she taunted before she threw the snowball at him. He had to be a moron if he was giving her ammunition. "I don't do refunds either." she pulled the hat from beneath her elbow and flourished it with a mock salute.
Mumbo glared at the girl, steam coming from his ears as he realized that she had taken his hat. Sure, between the wand and the hat the wand was more important, but it was still his magical hat. Also, it had all of his loot inside of it. And he really wanted to have his loot back. Still, he did enjoy watching her struggle with being blasted by the cold magic and tumbling into the snow, even if she was getting cocky with having his hat.
The snowball wasn’t that hard to dodge, dramatically done or otherwise. While that was going on, the glove army was starting to surround them. All the spunk in the world wasn’t going to matter between them and his spells. Still, the Titans had to be alerted by now, which meant he probably needed to exit stage left soon enough.
”You got spunk kid I’ll give you that. But whatever it is you want, it’s in that hat, and it’s not coming out without the magic words.”
Mumbo poofed up a deck of cards and began shuffling them.
”But tell you what, I think I can make a deal here,” he said as he pulled up a card with a picture of Ravager’s necklace on it and showed it to her,”I got to skedaddle soon, and obviously you only care about whatever it is I took from you. So, give me back the hat and,” he pressed the card between his hands,”Mumbo Jumbo!”
As he opened up his hands, Ravager’s necklace was in it, no worse for wear,”You’ll get your trinket back.”
Rose frowned when the blue magician dramatically dodged her snowball. The severe expression didn't stay on her face for long, however, the youngest Wilson couldn't help but smirk at the compliment and watch with mild suspicion tinged with interest. She watched as he pulled out a deck of cards from seemingly nowhere and shuffled them. He was talking about making a deal, but her expression stayed closed until he held up the card with a picture of her mother's necklace. Rose's eyes snapped to it. He seemed to take that as a hint. She watched as the magician said a magic word and the necklace appeared where the card had been.
"You've got a deal," Rose replied with a triumphant smirk. The girl held out one hand towards Mumbo, palm up, and held up his hat towards him with the other. Her hands shook slightly with the cold. If he tried to cheat her out of it she was going to put him in a world of pain or try to and her expression said just that.
If anyone understands the value of a hat, Penumbra does. Fortunately, his hat was firmly fixed on his head. Also, just like anyone, he like to take strolls in the park. There he was, walking, thinking, and trying to decide what to do about his spiraling life, when trouble found him. The moment Alphonse Carey heard screaming, he ducked off the path and pulled out his costume. It took him the entirety of thirty seconds to change and jump out of the bushes. By then, something odd played out in front of him.
Rocks are naturally heavy, so seeing a rock heavy enough to leave a person size hole in the ground, a girl looking like she'd thrown it, and a guy pop out of the girl saying she'd thrown it naturally surprised him. More surprising, was the fact the person was doing “magic tricks”. Penumbra instinctively started clouding their minds and circled the scene. He wanted to know what he was dealing with.
So, for the duration, he watched the two have at it. Impressive. He thought to himself, That girl is fast, strong, and determined...why do I get the feeling she has temper problems too? His attentions focused now on the blue-skinned magician, Those aren't simple parlor tricks. It looks like he's got real magic going on... maybe I can use that to my advantage. In the shadows, he smirked to himself and waited... closer, closer...
The white haired girl was about to take the necklace back, when Penumbra cast out his laugh, “HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA...” It echoed around as he mentally transmitted it into the pair's thoughts, “You were going to double cross each other, weren't you?” He started to circle invisibly around them, slowly drawing both his grappling gun and his M1911 from their shoulder holsters, “Isn't that what thieves and brigands do?”
Just as he settled in line behind the two, he raised both weapons and dropped the cloak in a way that made him appear from smoke, “Will you return everyone's belongings and turn yourself in, or do we need to do this the hard way?”
All it needed to be was a simple exchange. Sure, he could have just waved his wand and gotten the hat back, but he needed to get this girl to just leave him alone. Giving up one measly necklace wasn’t going to hurt his loot for the day so this was the better option. But just before they did the swap some weirdo came laughing in and demanding he surrender.
”Nice trick; learn it from the back of a comic?” Mumbo said, not really impressed by a simple appearing from nowhere trick. The more concerning part would be the guns the guy had, but that could be easily dealt with. But first…
Mumbo held a hand out and, by magic, his hat flew out of Ravager’s hand and back to his. Meanwhile he closed the hand the necklace was in, and when it opened it was gone. But Ravager would not have to fret as reappeared on her necklace.
”Meh, the necklace wasn’t worth the headache of a backstab anyway,” he replied as he placed his hat firmly back on his head,”But it seems the Amazing Mumbo’s going to have a second performance today as he performs the daunting feat of defeating a Titan. For my first trick, let’s get rid of those guns of yours; you’ll shoot your eye out kid.”
With practiced speed and agility Mumbo waved his wand at Penumbra, chanting the ancient words,”Presto Chango!”
If this worked, Penumbra would soon find his beloved guns sporting a colorful paint job and shooting water instead of bullets. Kids needed a good super soaker after all, not weapons.
The prisoner exchange was set for high noon. Except not, because it was happening right now. Rose held out the hat in exchange for her necklace, and suddenly creepy laughter surrounded them. The little ninja blinked in surprise and barely noticed the hat leave her hands. Luckily for Mumbo, though, the necklace appeared around the girl's neck and she beamed a happy smile.
That was when the gunman appeared. His guns were pointed in their direction, and Rose's eyes widened in surprise. It barely took her seconds to comprehend exactly what was going on. The girl saw the guns and moved. She didn't run away like most normal people would do. She charged at Penumbra with startling speeds that your average teenage girl would never have been able to achieve.
She set her course straight for Penumbra, leaping at the last second and flinging herself at him in the hopes she could knock him over and stun him enough to steal the weapon from him before he shot her. Seemed she didn't have to worry about it. Mumbo used his magic just before she made contact.
In hindsight, a frontal attack was probably the worst option. In fact, he probably should have created the illusion of himself wielding guns and then attack from another direction. It was too late now. The whole machine was set into motion, and there was no stopping it. His whole plan of peaceful negotiation was gone down the drain.
Even before the girl moved, or the mad magician changed his weapons into water toys, he was planning ahead. He would turn invisible again and attack from another angle. All I need to do is stall them, he mused, I just need to hit them from more than on- Everything changed in front of him.
Instantly, the girl charged. Penumbra gauged her speed from the fight, and he reacted. He didn't think, nor did he time his movement. He just moved. Instead of charging forward into the fight, he started his backward roll while taking that moment to go invisib- Did he just turn my guns into... oh you're kidding me.
With his weapons gone, Penumbra started to invisibly circle, slowly. Digging through his pockets, he hit the T-Comm to call for help. There was little he could do but pray and wait. Burying his pride, stress, and anger, he started laughing again, “HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA... nice parlor trick.”
“As for you,” His eyes never left the magician, but he addressed the girl with the same 'everywhere' voice, “go, I have no quarrel with you. This man stole. I don't care for that.” Even if Penumbra knew who the girl was, he would have said the same thing. It comes down to his form of justice. Do unto others as they do unto you, and, unless someone is causing harm or an immediate threat, give people a second chance. People turn over new leaves all the time, right?

Ravager’s charge served as an excellent distraction for Mumbo as his spell was cast. Apparently appeasing her was a good decision after all, as long as she kept the punches flying. Of course the kid pulling another disappearing trick was a slightly annoying but rectifiable trick. Pushing his wand into his hand, making it disappear somewhere on his person for safe keeping, he reached inside of his cape. Within seconds he pulled out two bombs, full of ink ready to spread out all over the area.
”Nice trick, but a good magician never does the same trick twice in one show,” Mumbo said as he threw out the bombs, which soon exploded. Either Penumbra would get covered, or at the very least the coating would make the tracking easier.
Meanwhile his small glove army was making its way towards Mumbo, letting the other civilians escape. They would provide some useful reinforcements should the fight turn physical again.
She'd been fighting a freaking blue magician but when the other dude who'd showed up with the guns also went invisible Rose decided that this was too freaking weird. She landed with a thud, glancing around wildly for her now invisible adversary. It took her a moment to figure out what was going on, but then she realized he was laughing…and probably at her.
The girl's eyes narrowed in frustration Then the mysterious voice said that the quarrel wasn't with her. Well, now it was since he'd pulled a gun on her. Not that the gun was a gun anymore...it was the principle of the matter! But the little ninja decided she was so done when ink exploded behind her, splattering her with dark dots. While Rose was normally a very stubborn adversary, this wasn't her fight. She had her mother's necklace. She had some laundry to do. She took Penumbra's advice and vanished.
Ooc: Will bring in Robin next round my turn so Penumbra had reinforcement~ if that's coolio with all of you?
Anyone with instincts would react just like Penumbra reacted when he saw the two objects flying through the air. Bombs?! Take cover! He jumped behind the closest standing object. In this case, the face of the rock he hid behind was covered in a thick layer of ink or paint. Slowly, he looked over around the rock and realized what situation he was stuck in. I can't move...I'm trapped. Quickly, he hit the distress call on the communicator again. Hurry up people...
Showing any sign of weakness meant that Penumbra was already on the way to losing. From behind the rock, and out of the magician's sight, his powers flickered off, revealing his location to anyone who cared to look. Still, Penumbra needed to show that he had the upper hand. Feigned confidence, and honest admiration, flowed as he spoke with the 'everywhere voice', "A great idea, but poor on the execution. You thought that I was invisible. Am I?"
"Maybe," Penumbra smirked, slowly regaining his confidence, "you should just turn yourself in." With that, he started projecting his invisibility again, and he decided it was time to render an illusion. Penumbra's illusions use the mind of the person he tries to affect. If he decided to create an illusion, vaguely, of someone's worst nightmare, whatever it was would show up to scare that person. At least, in theory, that would work. With someone as crazy as Mumbo, there was only one way to find out. Show us, what scares you the most? That? It's right there in front of you.
As an aside, he muttered, "What have I gotten myself into?"

The roleplay takes place after the series end of the original Teen Titans animated show, but does not include the movie Trouble in Tokyo. Since then Robin has been on something of a recruiting spree, and many new young heroes have found themselves a home in Jump City as well as Titan Tower.
