'Mysterious Burglar Strikes Again!'
Stephanie's eyes drifted from her chickpea salad onto the stack of newspapers that had been dropped off at the restaurant she was eating at. She looked up at her eating companion, a rough-looking redheaded girl with hair short and choppy around the shoulder. She wore a rather loose t-shirt with pawprints all over it and looked like she'd seen her fair share of fights, contrasting Stephanie's more affluent appearance that while untrimmed seem to give the impression she didn't live too badly. It couldn't be anymore flipped though. The girl was an old friend of Stephanie's from Gotham named Katrina who happened to be on this side of the country traveling with her rather well-off family. Steph however was living off Barbara Gordon's leftovers uptown.
"Man Kit, I'm kind of getting concerned about this thief running around the city. I hope they don't target your folks," Stephanie sighed, slipping one of the papers onto her table and starting to read it. The whole thing had started a week or two ago. Just after the incident at the Jump Museum with the Amarillo Starlight Diamond, what had to have been one of the burglars involved with the incident had begun a string of robberies of various historical objects. Authorities were drawing all sorts of conclusions on it, especially since the burglar was just in and out. They sometimes didn't even know a robbery had occurred until the morning. They were either a master of stealth or just had the plain ability to turn invisible. Stephanie wasn't too worried really. Her and the Titans would catch the thief eventually. She looked up at Katrina who seemed unconcerned with it at all.
"My uncle knows people. No one's dumb enough to mess with us," she answered, glancing at her rather sharp fingernails that were caked in dirt and grime.
Stephanie hadn't seen Katrina since she left for Jump, but the girl hadn't changed at all. Despite tons of lavish money, she still lived like a vagrant and wandered the streets at just about every hour of night. Steph realized she did the same thing though, only in costume. Maybe that was why they got along. As apathetic as Katrina seemed at times, the two girls cared a lot for each other having had each others backs on multiple occasions back in Gotham. Stephanie had yet to tell Katrina about her life as Spoiler though. It would come eventually. Just... something just seemed odd about telling her. Like it would jeopardize their relationship or something.
She shook it off when she noticed a commotion at the front of the restaurant. She gestured to it for Katrina who looked back at the two police officers demanding they get access inside. Nervously, the manager allowed them onto the porch where Stephanie and Katrina were eating. Katrine immediately became on edge in the presence of them. Stephanie was aware Katrina's record was far from clean and she didn't like cops. Back in Gotham, the ginger was wanted for at least 5 counts of assault. Stephanie knew they were all in self-defense though. Jump Police wouldn't be enforcing that though, and Stephanie knew. She reached out trying to ease Katrina into peace, but she didn't exactly know what to do when the cops came to their table quite intently.
Katrina gave the two men a look of severe hostility while Stephanie just looked on concerned. This would be awful, she didn't want her reunion ruined over the girl getting arrested for something as ridiculous as assault in self-defense. Maybe they could talk the guys out of it. Their eventual words caught Stephanie off-guard though. "Is one of you Ms. Stephanie Brown?" the taller cop asked intently. Raising an eyebrow, Stephanie lifted a hand to say 'Yes, I am her'. The question even confused Katrina who raised an eyebrow to match Stephanies. Almost as soon as her hand was up, a silver ring clicked around her wrist. She quickly realized it was a handcuff and she was in fact the one being arrested.
"Ms. Brown, you're under arrest for repeated counts of theft of the Jump City National Museum. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law," the other cop interjected, pulling her from her chair as she fought him realizing what was going on. As quickly as possible, he locked the other half of the handcuffs onto Stephanie's other hand. Katrina was quickly out of her seat ready to fight, but the first cop forced her down back into her seat.
"Wh-What?! How could I have robbed the museum?! What proof do you have?!" Stephanie screeched, wriggling against her captors. The cop holding Katrina down produced a picture clipping that looked like a still from a camera. It was in the Jump City Museum and displayed in enhanced glory, someone in Stephanie's Catgirl costume taking the latest item to go missing from the museum.
"Inquiries confirmed you were posing in this costume when the first object was stolen, and no one in this city possesses a matching costume," the cop explained as they pushed Stephanie towards their car.
"B-B-But that's ridiculous! My costume's still at ho-" she began, but quickly held her tongue, realizing saying such a thing was only going to make her seem more suspicious. As she was dragged out, she noticed Katrina's infamous sleight of hand go into a effect. She sighed, a sense of absolute worry washing over her. She got into trouble a lot, but nothing like this. As the two cops stuffed her into the back of their car like stuffing into a turkey, she hoped Katrina had a plan to save her.
Meanwhile, back at the table, Katrina was going a mile a minute with Stephanie's phone in hand. She had snagged the device off Stephanie while the cops were taking her away and was getting up at putting together a mass text. She read it over and swallowed a bit. This was going to make things very complicated for her. Stephanie was a friend though, and she didn't have many of those which meant she needed to do everything in her power to get her declared innocent.
"hi. this is kitrina falcone on my friends phone. shes been framed for something she didnt do and i need help. cops just took her away. they think shes catgirl. i know thats wrng though. dont ask y. i just do. meet me at benellis if u can help me." the text read in awful grammar. She never wrote professionally like that, it just happened when she texted. She put the phone away and began waiting, hoping someone of Stephanie's friend list would have a solution. Perhaps it was thankful she wasn't exactly observant or she may have noticed the giant black T on the cover panel of Stephanie's 'phone'. Completely unknowingly, she'd actually sent out a Titan alert and not a text like she had thought. Things were going to get very very interesting very very quickly.
