Characters: Wally West (outcast) & Dick Grayson (Silv) Setting: JLA Watchtower Previous Threads: None Plot Summary: Wally and Dick meet for the first time.
Robin, the Boy Wonder, didn't often get the opportunity to hang out with Superheroes that weren't Batman. The little boy in the brightly colored costume stayed by his mentor for a bit shyly glancing around at the room full of adults. There was a brightly-colored home-made banner along one wall that said Happy Birthday to Martian Manhunter. The green man kept insisting it wasn't actually his birthday, but they'd already celebrated everyone else's, and Robin was sure the green man secretly enjoyed the earth tradition. It wasn't too crowded yet, and conversation was a dull hum of white noise on an otherwise silent backdrop.
So far, for the entire ten minutes that they'd been at the party, all Robin had managed to do was hide in Bruce's cape and smile at his idols. He'd been especially intimidated when Superman had walked over to them and he'd vanished completely within the dark folds of fabric until gently coaxed out by a smiling boyscout in red and blue. Dick would never be able to tell Batman this but...Superman was his favorite.
He'd gone back into hiding after that, because Hawkman was scary and had shot a glance his way. Seeming to note that he had a hanger-on in his cape that wasn't leaving anytime soon, Bruce turned to kneel down besides his ward and side-kick. The man pulled the folds of dark fabric from Robin's head and regarded him fondly. "You can go and have fun," he reminded the child gently. Robin's green gloved hands fidgeted with the bottom of the red tunic he wore over his green leotard. "Clark brought cookies his mother made. Why don't you go get one?"
Dick's little face lit up at that. Ma Kent's cookies were even better than Alfred's! The pixie booted little boy skipped off then, his masked gaze looking for the dessert table with the promised sweets. The grin on his face blossomed into a smile as he spotted the cookies and he ducked under Wonder Woman with a giggle and ran over to them. He grabbed one cookie, and then after a second of consideration, reached for another.
Late! When Uncle Barry was involved, it didn't matter what the occasion, they were sure to be late. Even with all the speed in the world, they just couldn't meet the start time to anything. Wally never cared before since it never affected him in a totally negative way. But tonight? It was super important. It was the first night that he got to see the league all together, and it was his first time meeting some of the league members at all. This was HUGE and the last thing he wanted was the reputation of being the last one to show up to a party like his uncle. But here it was, ten minutes into the party and his uncle still wasn't there to pick him up.
After pacing back and forth in the living room for another five minutes, the door finally burst open and his uncle stood before him with a pearly white grin. "Ready to go, kid?"
"Yeah! For like twenty minutes." Wally tugged the hood of his costume over his head, combing his hair through the top and fitting the mask over his face. "Come on! We're late."
"Chill, kiddo. They're not going anywhere for a bit." Wally was about to argue that his uncle didn't really know that, since there was no way to really tell when evil would show up, but he didn't get the chance. Almost as quickly as the Flash came, he left and led the way toward to the Watch Tower. The only choice was to follow, and at least that meant that there would be no more dilly-dallying.
It only took a few minutes before he was walking across the floor of the Watch Tower and meeting the rest of the team. He was wide eyed and in awe at all the heroes that surrounded him. It was so much more different than meeting one of them on the field for assistance, which was rare since his uncle had only just started taking him out on real missions. Here, everything was so relaxed and he got the chance to meet and talk with his idols proper. Really, it was almost overwhelming and as much as he was vibrating with happiness, a little space wouldn't hurt either. After all, the focus was supposed to be on Man Hunter, not him. So his eyes wandered to his favorite place at any party, the snack table. And lo and behold, there was the perfect excuse.
"Hey, Flash! I'm gonna go make friends." He pointed at the one and only Boy Wonder, another idol of his. Who hadn't heard of the sidekick of the famous Batman? The child that made the possibility of himself being a sidekick all the more possible.
His mentor grinned and waved him off. That was all he needed before he disappeared in the blink of an eye and reappeared just as quickly in front of the smaller boy, a wide grin on his face. "Hiya!" Whoa, the guy was a lot shorter than he imagined, but that was kind of awesome at the same time. It made all of the stories that he heard about the other that much cooler. "I'm Kid Flash!" He stuck a hand out for the kid to shake.
Robin had decided on the second cookie, and was turning around with his stash, when all of a sudden there was another person in the way with a gigantic grin on their face. The Boy Wonder's masked eyes widened in surprise as he startled and dropped his cookies. Luckily he had amazing reflexes that let him save his snack before it hit the ground. He straightened, green gloved hands tightening around his treats, before he mirrored the smile of the taller boy. "Hi!" the dark haired boy said as his smile turned shy. He transferred the precious cookies to his left hand and reached out a green gloved right hand to meet the red one. "I'm Robin," he introduced himself shaking Kid Flash's hand.
His masked gaze slid over to their mentors, and he wondered why Batman hadn't told him that there were other child heroes. This was kind of important! Just because Batman didn't have an active social life didn't mean Robin didn't want one. His gaze slid back towards Wally. "So you -uh- you work with Flash?" the Boy Wonder asked even though the answer was obvious. "He's nice!" Dick blurted out stupidly before wincing slightly behind his own domino mask. "Are you really fast too?"
Wally held the other's hand firmly and shook it vigorously, super excited to meet the first kid hero. "Yeah, I know. It's really awesome to finallymeet you. Like, since I heard there was a party, I was really hoping that you'd be here." He really had. It was the first thing he thought of when Flash told him there was going to be a big party. Wally had friends at school and was quite social, but that was just one part of his life. Now he had a second half that involved running around in yellow spandex and saving the world one person at a time. What Wally really wanted was someone other than his uncle he could confide in about it, and what would be the best would be someone he could blur the lines with. He wasn't sure if he'd be able to get that all from the Boy Wonder, but at least he could get a confidante for the super hero bit.
"Sure do. I'd be a lost little speedster without the guy." Sure, he might have figured some things out on his own, but he was chasing the tail of his mentor, right on his heels. Wally knew that he wouldn't have been able to get that far on his own, in such the short amount of time. On top of that, it was nice having a cheat sheet for all the changes he went through instead of struggling through it. The struggle could be good, but cheat sheets and short cuts were nice.
The yellow speedster dipped his head back, soft laughter flowing from his lungs. "That's putting it mildly." Barry was probably the nicest guy he had ever met. There wasn't a bad bone in that guy's body and he could confidently say that he was sure the guy would never hurt a fly. It was a good trait, though. Something that didn't get a lot of hype anymore. His uncle was a prime example of how the good guy, both in and out of the suit, could come in first and Wally chased after those footsteps. He wanted something similar for his life. "I heard Batman is pretty intimidating, but I never actually met him. Is it true?"
Again, he chuckled. This kid was cute. Definitely not what he imagined, but he liked this much better. It was a quality he could get along with, and he was sure the other would grow calmer as they got to know each other. Wally jabbed a thumb at the red lightning bolt over his chest, wide grin showing his pearly whites. "I wouldn't be wearing the bolt if I weren't." He held a red gloved hand out to the boy. "Wanna see?"
Dick had lost his social circle, and all the friends he had grown up with, when he'd lost his parents. The lost little boy had a lot of trouble fitting into regular school, not just because of the traumatizing event, but also because he'd been conditioned from infancy to be wary of people who weren't a part of the circus. The townies were a scary sort of other, and Dick had suddenly found himself surrounded by them. Needless to say he didn't have terribly many friends at school. He was too short, too weird, too poor, too rich, too wrong to hang out with the other kids. He had Bruce and Alfred, of course, but the kid in front of him was an opportunity to have friends his own age again that he desperately didn't want to screw up. Robin found himself giggling nervously. "Batman can be kind of intimidating," Robin admitted with a birdlike shrug of his tiny shoulders. "Sometimes the crooks will pee themselves when they see him," the dark hair boy grinned at his own joke. He leaned in then, towards Wally, and lifted up a hand to shield his mouth from prying eyes before whispering this secret: "But he can be really nice too." Dick's mind went to the times that Bruce had comforted him after his parents died, remembering their training, and the quiet words of encouragement. Before the kid had figured out his new guardian was Batman it had been hard: he'd felt lonely and abandoned, but now that they had this secret together Dick felt useful again, appreciated again.
At the offer of a show-and-tell, the dark haired boy dressed like a tiny traffic light didn't miss a beat. "Yeah!" Dick exclaimed wide-eyed with a smile that stretched to show off a missing tooth. "I wish I had cool powers," Robin admitted wistfully.
"Really?!" That was even more intimidating than the stories that he heard. Just the sight of the man could instill terror in people. He doubted that he would ever carry such a presence. At least not while where such a happy yellow colored suit. His whole uniform just screamed non-threatening. Plus, none of the bad guys would really have much time to pee themselves since they'd all be in jail before they even realized what was happening. So maybe he didn't need intimidation on his side. Batman, though, he was just human. Anything extra he could get probably helped. His eyes looked at the slender shorty in front of him, wondering to himself if Robin would ever command such a presence. It was hard to imagine, and he kind of didn't want to imagine it. He liked this happy shy version of the other. "That's kinda cool, though. I wish I had that effect on a few different people at school."
Wally grinned before pressing his lips together and pulling the invisible zipper over his mouth, letting the other know that it was their secret. It was good that there was another side to the Dark Knight. One that only Robin seemed to see, sure, but since Robin was the one that had to deal with the hero all the time, it made sense.
"Super powers are cool, but you're even cooler. I mean, you take away my speed and I'm just a lame science geek. You can do it without the powers, and I'm sure it's harder, but that's what makes you awesome." He smiled and shrugged. "In my opinion anyway." Wally had heard many stories from his father about the dynamic duo, and even more from his uncle. Before the accident that gave him his powers, he had really wanted to be like Robin. He wanted to find his inner strength to become a butt-kicking machine, or with at least enough power to protect his family and friends. If Robin could learn how to do it, Wally figured that there was a small chance that he could figure it out too. But he never had to. The accident in his uncle's lab gave him access to the speed force so now he had another way to protect his important people.
Wally stretched an arm across the torso, and then the other one. Then he bent over and stretched the legs really quick before bending at the knees, crouching down and holding his hands out backwards to invite the boy upon his back. "Come on. It's one thing to watch, and another to experience."
Robin giggled at the sentiment, "Me too!" he agreed. He'd love to have Bruce's intimidation factor down. Then maybe the bullies would leave him alone and he wouldn't have to worry about accidentally giving himself away when his heart longed to defend himself. The grin stayed on Dick's face as Wally assured him, silently, that their secret was safe only to grow as the other boy assured him that super powers weren't not the only cool thing in the superhero community.
The boy's mask crinkled as he beamed at Kid Flash. Fighting crime without powers was hard, but he'd never tried it with powers, so it was difficult to make an objective comparison. "Thanks!" Dick chirped. He liked Wally's opinion. He liked Wally's offer of an adventure even more. He watched as the taller boy stretched and crouched down, beckoning the smaller one forward. Green pixie boots hesitated, the toe skidding across the floor, as the dark haired boy paused. "Really?" he asked, masked eyes wide with hope.
But he didn't really need that second invitation. With one more look at Kid Flash's inviting freckled face the little acrobat bounced forward and hopped on. He wrapped his arms around Wally's neck, latched on as easily as a baby koala, and peered over the other boy's shoulder curiously. "Ready!" Dick whispered because he was so close to the other boy's ear.
The first thing that he noticed when the other slid onto his back was how light the kid was. Kid Flash kind of assumed that, with as small as Robin was, he would be light. Actually taking on the weight, though, it was surprising just how much so. That had to be handy, since he and Batman were supposed to be soaring from rooftop to rooftop. Acrobats were supposed to be lightweight for that reason. It helped give them more air and made it easier to stay in the air. His arms hooked around behind his knees, hands wrapping around the legs over the shins. He stood up, lifting from the knees and bounced a little as he walked around in a small circle to get used to the extra weight. The Flash could adjust in a second's notice, but since Wally was still newer at channeling the speed force, he was a little slower.
Wally didn't need to be told twice. "If you got a watch, take a look! Let's see how long it takes to find the gym." He gave boy a second to check the time before he shifted onto the balls of his feet for his running stance, and then pushed off. It didn't take much and the scenery flew by. Wally could run faster than the speed of sound now, but since it was the Boy Wonder's first ride and they weren't in danger, he toned it down a little. Robin probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference. Fast was fast to non-speedsters, and the were definitely going fast. They were away from the dessert table and in the hall in a split second, whizzing through the metal corridors and checking the different doors to find the one that led to the gym. As he turned the corner, he kept the momentum the same, just as his mentor had taught him, and used the wall as buffer the turn so that he didn't have to slow at all. It was different, having the extra weight on him, even if Robin was so light. It was a good different, though, good practice. And then it was kind of cool to have Robin's cape whipping through the wind behind them. He would never want a cape himself, but the new experience was exciting.
It took him around thirty seconds of blurred halls until he found the final destination, sliding to stop in the middle of the room. "Ta-daaaaa," he sang, as they came to a stop, looking over his shoulder at the other. "How'd we do? Record time?"
Dick pulled his glove away from his wrist, revealing an adorably bat-themed watch, as masked eyes carefully cataloged the time. "Okaaayyyaahhhhh-" the tiny Robin's voice was lost to their momentum as they flashed down the corridors at a pace his eyes had trouble following. He didn't realize Kid Flash's route to the gym was a lot less direct than he would have taken, mostly because they still got there faster than Robin could manage at a dead sprint. Actually, probably even faster than he could manage even if he smuggled a go-kart to careen down the halls in. Not that Batman would ever approve.
"That was the coolest ever!" Robin exclaimed when they had stopped, his face flushed, and a gigantic goofy smile on his face. He fumbled with his watch, to check the time. "Thirty seconds!" the smaller boy crowed, hands raising in triumph with the balance only an acrobat could muster. "I've never gone anywhere this fast!" Which wasn't totally true. They had teleporters to get up here, but that was more of a blink-and-you-miss-it event as opposed to a wild ride. "Totally a record! Is that the fastest you can run?" Dick asked excitedly, bringing his hands back to Wally's shoulder's so he could lean forward over them. "Can you go as fast as Superman!?"

The roleplay takes place after the series end of the original Teen Titans animated show, but does not include the movie Trouble in Tokyo. Since then Robin has been on something of a recruiting spree, and many new young heroes have found themselves a home in Jump City as well as Titan Tower.
