PERSONALITY
Raven is arguably one of the most mature members of the team, and obviously the quietest. She's smart, with a calculating eye and a calm logic to most of her decisions and remarks, and sees many things in a black and white manner, due to her resistance to engage the more emotional side of life.
That said, however, Raven is not a cold-hearted machine. She is merely an introvert, not anti-social, preferring to be in the background and alone, but not hating people in general. In fact, she cares deeply for her friends, her team, and anyone else that she claims as her own, including Melvin, Timmy, and Teether, among others. Her loyalty to these people, and to most of Jump City as a whole, knows no bounds, and she will just as soon give her own life before seeing her friends come to harm.
It is rather difficult, however, to become her friend in the first place. She has a healthy dose of pride in herself and will not be walked on, so while she is both understanding and compassionate, Raven is slow to trust, and nearly impossible to convince once that trust is broken. She believes in forgiving and forgetting, but not in doling out innumerable second chances, thus once she is betrayed the first time, she becomes twice as hard to win over the next.
Finally, defying a bit of the stereotypical gothic persona, Raven is secretly optimistic, at least deep down and when it counts. On the surface, her darkness comes across as a cloud of depression and negativity, and she has been known to play into that, but Robin has described her as "the most hopeful person he has ever known" and truly she is. Her entire life is evidence to that, else she would have given up the moment she learned of the prophecy that hung over her head, would have quit as soon as she felt the evil residing with the good in her heart.
In a nutshell, Raven is the shadow of the team, preferring to remain on the outside, dark and quiet. But, like a shadow, she would be nothing without the light of her team.

POWERS/SKILLS
-Soul-Self
Drawn from her supernatural heritage, Raven has the rather unique ability to detach her soul from her body. Once in corporeal form, it generally takes the image of an other-worldly massive black raven, leaving her physical body behind in a defenseless and comatose state or else bringing it along with her via teleportation. Raven's soul-self shows when she uses her energy shields, domes, platforms, and 'weapons.' She is, in fact, throwing a field of energy into being, derived from her soul-self, to protect, transport, or attack, respectively.
Drawback:
Because she is using her own soul and energy, too much fighting in this manner will leave Raven exhausted. She can continue for at least half an hour, but past that she begins slowing down and every minute wears on her like an hour. Additionally, taking flight with her soul self completely detached from her body leaves her physical self completely defenseless until she returns. She very rarely does this unless she knows and trusts the company she's leaving her body in.
-Levitation
Though not technically 'flight,' Raven's levitation functions in much the same way, allowing her to bypass the intense and pointless boredom of walking from place to place.
-Telekinesis
When Raven moves objects or people, seemingly with her mind, what she is truly doing is merging a small piece of her soul with the object or person, thus allowing her to take control of it.
Drawback:
Because of the obvious intimacy this would give her when bonding her soul with a human, she rarely uses this power on people.
-Teleportation
Able to hop from dimension to dimension, Raven can teleport herself from one place to another, via other planes. She is capable of bringing along others for the ride with her, at least four at a time. If more is possible, it has yet to be seen.
Drawback:
For beings unused to this form of travel, the trip can be extremely unnerving and uncomfortable.
-Empathy
Ironically, as locked down as she keeps her own emotional range, Raven can sense the feelings and emotions of all of those around her. Within a limited range, they surround her, little waves and clouds of anger and fear and love and happiness that brush against her consciousness. Raven can know these emotions as her own, should she delve closer into them, and because of this can, on rare occasion, sense when someone is lying to her. This is rather unreliable, however, and only really works on a basic level. If someone says they're fine! and she can still feel their turmoil, she'll know they're masking over their pain. On the other hand, if someone (such as Terra) has it in their heart to betray her, but continues to feel content, Raven will know no deception until the lie is made known.
Drawback:
This power is essentially useless.
-Healing
When faced with the wounds of another, whether physical or mental (though almost always the former), Raven has the ability to draw away the pain of the one hurting and heal them to a degree. While she cannot bring people back from the dead, she can certainly be the deciding factor in whether they live or die. She can heal a person completely, given enough time and energy, but for the most part, she only moves them past the danger of dying and then lets nature and medical technology take over from there.
Drawback:
When Raven heals a wound and draws away the pain, she is taking it on, herself. While she won't develop the same injuries, she will feel the same level of pain. For example, healing a gunshot would leave her gasping for breath, as if she herself had just taken the bullet, but she would not show any other signs or negative effects of the wound. Because of this, though, she prefers to use this ability extremely sparingly, unless the need is dire and immediate.
".... I could not bring my passions from a common spring...."
WEAKNESSES
- Her temper
Raven's anger is downright dangerous when unleashed and it is against this demon of hatred that she fights the most often. While it is a general understanding that Raven denies her emotions to control her powers, that is not entirely true. She can control them perfectly fine when experiencing happiness, joy, and love. But with the good comes the adverse, and that is the main weakness Raven guards against. Her anger is the trigger that releases the demon inside, nearly every time. Once she loses her grip on her temper, it is difficult to regain, and during this time Raven also loses complete control over her actions, shown in the fight with Dr. Light during which she could not hold back from terrorizing the man, even as he begged for mercy. Much to her chagrin in the aftermath.
-"Azarath Metrione Zinthos"
Raven is fairly, though not completely, dependent on her ability to utter the phrase 'Azarath Metrione Zinthos' to focus and unleash her powers. Being unable to say these words can render her powerless, though she has shown herself able to access her powers through sheer willpower.... On rare occasion.
- Her team
Being so close to her core team is one of Raven's greatest weaknesses, as they can rather easily be used against her. As demonstrated when her father began his takeover of the world, Raven opted rather for her friends to survive just a little while longer than to have them fight with her for the greater good. Even knowing better now, Raven would be hard-pressed to allow harm to come to her family unless there was entirely no other way.
-Pride
Raven's shown more than once that, even though she attempts (and a lot of the time achieves) humility, her pride can and does get in the way. While she believes it is a good thing to be confident, to be sure of one's abilities, she's admittedly taken it way too far, to the point of inadvertently setting her powers lose on her own team. She's slowly learning that being too proud of her own magic, or being too sure that she is above feeling (especially fear), can hurt more than just her ego when it's proven false.
- Insecure
In sharp contrast with her confidence and pride is Raven's deep set fear of rejection. This has been her downfall more than once, specifically a year ago when she was presented with a few sugar-coated lies and won over by a greedy heart. Malchior used her, pointed out some of her greatest flaws and embarrassing moments, and showed her one of her greatest short-comings. Her desire for love and acceptance is one of the main things that brought her together with her team in the first place and is something she's repeatedly come up against since.
"....From the same source I have not taken my sorrow...."
HISTORY
Raven was conceived in ritual and born in premonition, marked for evil before she was even alive. She was taken almost immediately from her mother by the Monks of Azarath, who believed that Arella would be unable to keep from doting affection upon her daughter. Such affection would instigate emotional responses from Raven, such responses would unleash the powers within the half-demon, such powers would draw her closer to her father and that simply could not happen.
Trigon created Raven for one reason, to be his gem, his portal, and she lived for no other reason than to prove him wrong.
For sixteen years, Raven lived on the peaceful plane of Azarath, being taught and schooled by the monks there, learning to control her immense and rather unpredictable power, developing habits of meditation, learning to deny any and all emotion, and receiving nothing as far as affection in return. Not a hug, not a touch, not a kiss goodnight.
Seeking to run from Trigon, Raven found her way out of Azarath and into Jump City, where she inadvertently ran into and befriended the Titans, though they were hardly Titans to begin with. She worked with them, proving to herself that she could be good, if she only tried hard enough.
But all the good in the world couldn't negate the prophecy that hung over her head, and when she turned seventeen, those words became truth.
She chose to give herself up as Trigon's portal to earth, rather than watch her friends fight to their deaths while senselessly protecting her. The little piece of her powers that she imbibed each of the four with was all that remained of Raven after Trigon came to earth.
Or so it would seem.
In fact, her soul-self had manifested on the earth-of-Armageddon as a seven-year-old little girl, and with the help of Robin and the others, Raven managed to steal back control from Trigon, fighting until he was sent back to where he'd come from, and in the process restoring herself-- Mind, body, powers, completely.
Since that victory, since knowing she no longer had a set moment in time to dread, Raven began lightening up, allowing herself to feel, if only little by little. She dedicated herself all over again to aiding the citizens of Jump City alongside the Titans, and that is where she is found now. Beside her four core friends, the honoraries and the new faces, fighting for truth. Justice.
And, inevitably, the last slice of pizza.
